One of the co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he will independently develop the controversial product as part of an individual collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Corporate Owner

This latest announcement intensifies the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders have asserted how the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".

Watermelon Sorbet as a Symbol for Support

The entrepreneur announced via social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”

This particular fruit has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution in disputed territories.

This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which originally created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Changes and Future Intentions

The founder indicated how he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to Unilever.

The announcement comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years with the organization, mentioning worries that its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence so that the company can fulfill the social mission, the values which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
