Can You Crack It? That Overlooked Netherlands Creation That Forged our Modern Globe
There are numerous contenders to claim the title of “world’s greatest invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, however, that title belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, constructing a modest trading ship required around 10 sawyers laboring over three months,” writes the author. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber might be produced in less than seven days.”
Owing to this speedy automated cutter, that converted logs into boards using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to construct ships more quickly compared to any other nation, which unleashed one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic as well as artistic supremacy in the continent and the globe.
The First Genuine Industrial Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, contends the writer, represented “mankind’s initial authentic industrial apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. One component transformed its rotary movement into up-and-down motion to power the saw. Another component changed that same rotary movement into a lateral motion advancing the timber toward the blade. A geared mechanism moved the log ahead a measured step per cycle.
“Every component seemed simple by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to combine these parts in order that the machine acted within a precisely synchronized order, cutting on every descending stroke while advancing with each return stroke. It was a remarkably intelligent use of fundamental components.”
A fact that brings us to today’s puzzle. The task is you to reimagine one of the basic ideas behind this historic invention.

A “sleeve”, which is a tube or sleeve into which one of the rods can slide perfectly. (Assume it is possible to put things on a base, so the parts do not fall down.)
