Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts down to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," he commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
