Cowboys Owner Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators
The National Football League has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at fans during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of $16 billion, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.

This event follows a contentious offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key defensive player Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
