Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police issued security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
