The speculation about The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
