Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Signing for United

Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Bayern was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
