Shot-stopper Mary Earps has publicly stated that her freshly launched autobiography was not designed to “criticize individuals” and shared worry that public reaction has been “misrepresented.”
Disputed Remarks and Public Criticism
The ex-Lionesses player, who had a vital part in the championship win, encountered disapproval from fans and Blues coach Sonia Bompastor after commenting about former team-mate Hannah Hampton and coach Sarina Wiegman.
In her book, Earps allegedly stated told Wiegman she was “supporting poor attitude” by bringing Hampton back to the national team after dropping her for being “unruly and inconsistent.”
“The response has been immense to see how certain aspects were twisted,” Earps shared in an interview.
Defending Her Intentions
Earps clearly stated that the autobiography was not designed to harm individuals.
- “My memoir wasn’t created to damage reputations in any shape or form.”
- “That is not who I am as a person.”
- “This is real life. It has consequences. It is not entertainment.”
She also discussed how women’s football has moved into an area that has become “somewhat similar to show business,” where private matters are scrutinized heavily for public amusement.
Dynamic with the Manager
Earps wrote about losing the starting position as England’s number one prior to Euro 2025 and how that created tension with Wiegman.
She explained it was “not a rapid decline” in their dynamic—just a clash of viewpoints—and she maintains respect for the manager.
“There were things that took place at that time that I wish had happened differently,” Earps remarked.
Individual Difficulties
In her memoir, Earps discussed openly the bullying she suffered at during her education, describing it as a “particularly challenging” part to read again because it brought back previous trauma.
- “I didn’t stand up back then.”
- “I always believed that people were against me for a long time.”
- “I became accustomed to feel like people were indifferent.”
These emotions led to stress outbreaks, and Earps shared she struggled with physical appearance and used alcohol during the global health crisis to manage mental health struggles.
Relationships and Goals
Earps openly discussed that she is in a same-sex relationship and expressed pride about her relationship.
She also mentioned her wish to have children and revealed she has undergone egg freezing for later fertility treatment.
“I would love to be a mother and have a family of my own,” Earps said. “I enjoy my football career, but I wish to have a child later down the line.”
Earps characterized the egg-freezing procedure as “intense and intrusive” and pushed for more investigation tailored to athletes undergoing equivalent processes.
Throughout the interview, Earps maintained that she has no feelings of remorse about her career or life decisions, highlighting that she always acted with integrity.
