Meteorologists have indicated an icy commencement to the new year, with snowfall expected over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Plans Go Ahead Amid Alerts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are set to proceed, unlike last year's postponement. This comes despite advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," stated the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. Readings are due to be low, so extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for Friday

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travelers are advised to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on public transport.

The Mercury Forecast to Fall Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Advisories Activated

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this signified the weather could to cause major effects across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.

The guidance for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is absolutely essential.
