New York Unveils Portal for Residents to Share ICE Images After Detentions of 4 American Citizens
The state AG has introduced a fresh online portal urging residents to submit photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement across the state. This move comes just a day after a high-profile immigration operation rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, triggering large-scale protests.
American Citizens Held During Enforcement Action
A lawmaker disclosed during a news conference that four citizens were taken into custody and detained for "almost a full day" after the previous day's operation. Rallies broke out in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen has the right to exist without intimidation," the AG wrote in a release.
"If you witnessed and captured federal operations yesterday, I urge you to provide that footage with the authorities. We are dedicated to examining these accounts and evaluating any violations of law."
Submission Process
The form offers fields to upload visual evidence of the operation, along with a section to indicate location information. When submitting, individuals must mark a checkbox that acknowledges that "authorities could utilize any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, such as in a lawsuit or public report."
Information about the ICE Action
The Manhattan operation, which observers say included more than 50 government officers, took place in a famous district of Manhattan where counterfeit products and merchandise are regularly available in large quantities – frequently to visitors.
Recordings of the operation reveal numerous hooded and equipped federal agents zip-tying and detaining a individual, and pushing back bystanders. Crowds of New Yorkers pursued the officers along the roads. An military-style transport was also seen rolling through the urban roads.
Leadership Statements
At a midweek briefing held with the rights organization, the congressman, a Democrat, stated that four nationals were taken by federal agents for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be detained for unjustly." He noted the citizens were freed on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman said. "This is a armed campaign to incite tension. It is merely a justification to provoke conflict for this administration to bring in the troops to prevent violence that they themselves caused."
Broad Criticism
Outrage over the ICE raid rapidly grew – every mayoral candidates denounced the incident, including Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration opts for authoritarian theatrics that create fear, not safety. It must stop," a contender declared.
The city's immigrant rights groups spoke out as well.
"Federal officers targeted Manhattan's Chinatown with armored transports, masked agents and tactical gear to focus on street vendors attempting to earn income. This action had no connection to public safety and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and areas," stated the head of a advocacy group.
Official Guidelines
Official guidelines forbids the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has stated it does not arrest or detain citizens. However, investigative journalism has revealed that over 170 citizens have been detained unlawfully by ICE since the beginning of the existing leadership.
Ongoing Trend
Enforcement actions have been becoming more common in the state and around the country lately.
A recent action in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the current administration. Protests opposing ICE are widespread as are allegations of force and inhumane treatment.
Latest, a document provided by advocacy organizations claimed inadequate care of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
