As stated by a former high-ranking official from the UK's largest police force, law enforcement are now required to publicly share the ethnic backgrounds of individuals under investigation in response to a rise in far-right speculation on social media platforms.

Recent Incident: Knife Attack on Train in a UK County

Early Sunday, UK rail authorities reported the arrest of two individuals following a mass stabbing aboard a train in the region. One suspect, a 32-year-old black British national, and a second, a 35-year-old British national with Caribbean roots, were initially held. Subsequently, the older suspect was released with no charges, and authorities stated he had no connection in the attack.

Updated Protocols to Fight False Claims

This past summer, revised directives were issued to tackle the dissemination of false narratives on social media, which had escalated after the tragic murder of three schoolgirls in a English town last summer.

Yet, campaigners warned that this approach could lead to an excessive focus on the ethnicity of suspects and spark further extremist narratives when information are not shared with the public.

Insights from a Former Officer

Dal Babu, who worked in the UK's largest police force, described the requirement for law enforcement to reveal the ethnicity of individuals in incidents involving people of colour as an "unintended consequence".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he said.

He voiced understanding for his ex-peers in the force, noting that they are “in a no-win situation”. “They are under pressure because there is such intense speculation from the far right on social media after every major incident about the background of suspects.”

Political Reaction

A Conservative MP, whose district includes the area where the train halted, called it “unfortunate” but essential for authorities to swiftly release the ethnicities of those detained.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he commented, adding that social media are used to push agendas, making it critical for police to provide facts to counter rumors.

Far-Right Exploitation

Prior to the official disclosure, conservative figures had called for a quicker action. For instance, the shadow home secretary urged for prompt sharing of identity details, while the Reform UK leader posted on X that the people should be informed “without delay”.

Moreover, far-right social media accounts sought to manipulate the event. One account named “UK Nationalist”—boosting thousands of followers—circulated an baseless allegation that a individual with a blade had been yelling “Allahu Akbar”.

Ongoing Suspicion

Even after authorities confirmed that the suspects were UK citizens, some figures continued to suggest that details was being concealed. A former Reform UK co-leader stated it was “almost inconceivable” that the attack was not an act of terrorism, contrary to official statements to the opposite.

Guidance Background

These protocols were developed by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) in acknowledgment of “public concerns” and to ensure law enforcement procedures were “effective in today’s fast-paced information era”.

This move came shortly after a political party alleged that officials of concealing the details and immigration status of two men accused in a different incident in a UK county.

Precedents

In May, when a vehicle drove into spectators celebrating a football victory, local authorities revealed that the suspect was a white UK national to quash rumors of a terrorist attack by an Asian man.

The NPCC stressed that choices on releasing such information would be made by individual police forces, taking into account wider legal and ethical considerations. Verifying a suspect’s immigration status would be handled by the Home Office, not police.
