While People in Germany were known for a reputation as Europe's most enthusiastic nudists, recent findings indicates that Denmark's citizens are both more open-minded about stripping off in open spaces, but also more prone to have practiced it.
Survey Methodology
This extensive survey covered 6 European states – United Kingdom, Denmark, the French republic, the German state, Italy and Spain. Findings indicated that Danish respondents emerged as most inclined to assert that stripping off publicly was entirely appropriate – in addition to have done it themselves.
General Attitudes Throughout European Nations
As expected, substantial percentages across all six countries felt that being nude was permissible in official clothing-optional locations. Between the vast majority had no objections with private nudist camps, while most participants supported clothing-optional shorelines.
Over half respondents from Denmark state having been fully nude in open spaces
Country-Specific Attitudes
While respondents across all participating nations objected to nudity in locations including public swimming pools and urban green spaces, Denmark's views differed significantly. Around thirty-five percent Denmark's participants considered it appropriate to remove clothing on a non-nudist beach, and 87% thought stripping off in your own garden was appropriate.
Open Countryside Attitudes
Danish respondents also demonstrated more acceptance toward being nude in the rural areas. Meanwhile, majorities in other countries – ranging from 58% in the German population to 78% in Britain – considered naked rambling as inappropriate.
Skinny Dipping Practices
Concerning swimming naked in the ocean, inland waters or rivers, Denmark's residents showed by far the most openness. Approximately sixty-four percent considered the practice completely fine, in contrast to just 25% of Italian respondents, thirty-one percent of French respondents, 32% of British people and 49% of respondents from Germany.
Actual Participation Rates
Participants from Denmark didn't just voice accepting perspectives but also demonstrated high participation rates. In response to queries about in what multiple locations they had actually stripped off as adults, more than half of respondents from Denmark stated one or more occasion.
That contrasted with 45% of German respondents and forty-four percent of Spaniards. A noticeable difference emerged among these countries and the others, with just 31% of participants from France, twenty-five percent of UK residents and twenty-two percent of Italians confessing to being completely naked in public places as adults.
Specific Location Breakdown
- Participants from Denmark emerged as most inclined to strip off in their personal outdoor space and swim naked, with 36-37% reporting such experiences
- This contrasts with just around one-quarter of Spaniards
- approximately one-fifth to one-third of participants from Germany
- nineteen percent of French people
- around one-eighth of British people
- approximately one-tenth of respondents from Italy
German Naturist Tradition
Participants from Germany, though, demonstrated their dominant role when it concerned public nudity in settings purposely established for naturist activities. This illustrates Germany's traditional "free-body culture" – a cultural phenomenon tracing its roots to the 1800s.
Although falling interest in the past few years, Germany continues to be among the most liberal nations worldwide for being naked in public in designated spaces. Areas of shorelines, lakefronts plus campgrounds are reserved by law for clothing-optional recreation.
Official Nudist Locations
Data showed that only twelve percent of participants from Denmark had stripped off in designated clothing-optional areas including shorelines or campsites. This was higher than British involvement at 6%, was similar to France's rates at fourteen percent and Italy's at 11%, however fell below Spain's 22% plus German twenty-five percent.
Openness to Future Nudity
Danes also showed greater willingness to practice being naked publicly going forward. Around half stated they would be open to remove clothing in a public place, compared with forty-two percent of German respondents, 38% of respondents from Spain, 34% of French respondents and 29% of each of Britons and respondents from Italy.
Demographic Variations
Throughout the participating states, male respondents exhibited higher willingness than female participants regarding public nudity. Generational variations furthermore emerged: Within Danish society, younger people were more open to clothing-optional practices, whereas in Germany the reverse trend emerged.
Specifically, 31% of 18- to 34-year-olds indicated interest to practice nudity in open spaces, against 46-48% of older adults.
