The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... For Now.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the popular program wrapping up—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the writers' room opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's by design. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by audience chatter.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner See the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
