Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose impact on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
