The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage creates Real Madrid history in a pivotal European match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he added to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'
During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.
However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, each day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated the player after his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his age and experience.
"He's a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to play for either country at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.
Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the success at Manchester.
