Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
