What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 lives were killed and over 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
